2009 NFL Week 1 Predictions & Picks; Early Betting Odds & Spreads

All lines were from (8/15/2009)Pittsburgh Steelers (-5) vs. Tennessee Titans
Opening game for the defending champions in Pittsburgh should be a win for the Steelers, but it will be a close defensive battle. I’m taking the Steelers to win, but the Titans to cover the five point spread. Titans (+5), Steelers to Win. Prediction: 20-17 Steelers

New Orleans Saints (-13) vs. Detroit Lions
My first nugget of advice is for you to stay away from this game, my second is not to bet on the Saints. New Orleans has an average defense at best and even though the Lions are weak, there is no telling what will happen in this contest. I like the Lions to lose by a touchdown, but cover the spread. I like the over in this game. Lions (+13), Saints to Win. Prediction: Saints 35-28

Atlanta Falcons (-4) vs. Miami Dolphins
Matt Ryan and the Falcons will come out hot with Tony Gonzalez and an improved defense. Atlanta (-4). Prediction: 28-17 Falcons

Carolina Panthers (-1) vs. Philadelphia Eagles
This game could go either way, and obviously Vegas odds-makers agree judging by the -1 line in favor of the home team. I think when the season is over the Eagles will have the better record, but I like the Panthers to win their opener thanks to the running game. Panthers (-1). Prediction: 35-27 Panthers.

Baltimore Ravens (-9) vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Ravens are tough, but will not beat the Chiefs by 9+ points even in Baltimore. Kansas City is improved (even without Gonzalez) and should compete in this game. Chiefs (+9). Prediction: 21-17.

Cincinnati Bengals (-3) vs. Denver Broncos
Not exactly a quality match-up here. Carson Palmer looks good so far in the preseason and Ocho Cinco should have a better year than in ’08. The Broncos still don’t have a defense, so I have to go with Cincy here. Bengals (-3). Prediction: 28-14 Bengals.

Minnesota Vikings (-3) vs. Cleveland Browns
Vikings defense will eat the Browns alive. Go with the under if 37 or less. Vikings (-3). Prediction: 17-10 Vikings.
Houston Texans
(-4) vs. New York Jets
The 4 point spread scares me, but I still like the Texans (but barely). The Texans defense will be tough for Sanchez to deal with in his first NFL game. Texans (-4). Prediction: 28-20 Texans.

Indianapolis Colts (-7) vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Garrard hasn’t shown up in big games, or many games at all for that matter. Colts (-7). Prediction: 24-10 Colts.

Dallas Cowboys (-3, -140) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa will be better than people think. Derrick Ward, Kellen Winslow, and Leftwich will all have solid season. Antonio Bryant is expected to be healthy for weak one as well. Dallas will pull it together, but will struggle weak one. Tampa will upset the Cowboys in Tampa. Tampa Bay (+3). Prediction: 28-27 Buccaneers.

Arizona Cardinals (-6.5) vs. San Francisco 49ers
49ers are a mess, Cardinals are the defending NFC Champions and will show up big in week 1. Cardinals (-6.5). Prediction: 35-14 Cardinals.

New York Giants (-6) vs. Washington Redskins
This will be a great week one match-up that should stay close. I do like New York to win, but Washington will cover the spread. Redskins (+6). Prediction: 21-17.

Seattle Seahawks (-7) vs. St. Louis Rams
Try to say Hasselbeck to Houshmandzadeh five times fast. You might hear that more than five times during this game. Seahawks roll. Seattle (-7). Prediction: 31-10.

Green Bay Packers (-3) vs. Chicago Bears
The Cutler led Bears will march into Green Bay and steal one from the Packers. Bears (+3). Prediction 20-14 Bears.

New England Patriots (-10, -120) vs. Buffalo Bills
I have to go with the Patriots in this one. Brady is back in classic form and that is bad news for the Buffalo Bills. Patriots (-10). Prediction: 35-17.

San Diego Chargers (-7) vs. Oakland Raiders
The Raiders open up their 2009 season at home on Monday Night Football. The Raiders will try everything to stop Rivers and LT from embarrassing them on their on field. The Chargers will win, but the Raiders will cover. Raiders (+7). Prediction: 24-20 Chargers win, Raiders cover.
